Recommended Video Games

Note: In order to hopefully keep this list interesting, I'll try to maintain most of my recommendations towards more independent productions, nothing too mainstream, without necessarily having to be something too obscure either. Within these boundaries, I'm going to be very selective. The intent is to communicate the most with the least, sort of following the words of well-known film editor and sound designer, Walter Murch, from his book "In the Blink of an Eye".

The Swapper (2013)

A sci-fi puzzle platformer designed by just four dudes. What is the mind, what is death, these are the kind of things that preoccupy this video game. It is one of the most well designed, engaging, deep and unsettling games I have ever played. It's bloody brilliant I tell you!

Botanicula (2012)

A point-and-click adventure game developed by Amanita Design (a small Czech studio). At first I thought it was just cute but as I got into it I became enthralled with it's beautiful, immense little world. It's sound and visual design is one-of-a-kind, it has a lot of humor, it's puzzles ask of you to be imaginative and creative, to give way to non-linear thinking. It's just a very cool experience and one of few video games that I would also highly recommend for children.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (2004)

[I had a flawless playthrough with Wesp5's basic patch and HD tool within]
A big budget action RPG (role-playing game) that was a failure commercially and then developed a cult following. It's an awesome game that got a bad rap for being rushed into sales unpolished, but was embraced by a community of modders (noticeably Wesp5), who saw its utter genius and continued fixing it, so now we can play it properly. In this video game you submerge yourself into a dark supernatural universe that is both seductive and utterly disturbing. At its core there is this sadness and decay (of modern society? of power structures?) But you'll find no heroes here; some well-placed rebelliousness maybe... It has its technical limitations and its game design kinda falls flat during the second half, but it's still totally worth it. There is no other RPG video game like it.
